Baldwin Park Water Information

The valley County Water District started in 1926 as the Baldwin Park water district and is an important and special body that supplies water services to Baldwin Park residents. The district is above a part of the Main San Gabriel Groundwater Basin, which provides most of the district’s water. The district boasts of supplying water that has a quality that exceeds the state’s expectations. The district aims to deliver clean and reliable water to all cities within San Gabriel.

Valley County Water District sources its water from 4 active wells with 17 booster pumps. It has three water treatment facilities, six reservoirs, 12,470 water meters, and more than 100 miles of pipeline, with which it supplies water to the residents of Baldwin Park.

On March 11, 2012, groundwater was contaminated in Baldwin Park with perchlorate after a water treatment failure. The city’s authorities advised that the residents look for alternative water sources, pending the time of water decontamination. These alternate water sources included bottled water consumption. During this period, the residents of Baldwin Park could not boil water for tea or coffee and had a scare due to the harmful effects of perchlorate on health and normal body metabolism.

In adherence to the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, the Valley County Water District completed its assessment for the drinking water sources in 2000. This serves to promote source water protection by identifying activities that are detrimental to the water quality of the source and eliminating them. Apart from the Main San Gabriel Groundwater Basin, other water sources in Baldwin Park include reservoirs, rivers, ponds, lakes, wells, and springs. Surface water that flows from one point to another dissolves some minerals and contaminants as it goes, which may have health implications on man and animals.

Some of these contaminants include:

  • Inorganic Contaminants: These include metals and salts that may be mutagenic or lead to chemical imbalances in the body. They may occur naturally or may be from anthropogenic activities.
  • Pesticides and Herbicides: These occur from industrial, commercial, agricultural, and residential use and may cause harmful health hazards.
  • Radioactive Contaminants: These can also be naturally occurring or may result from mining activities or gas production.
  • Microbial Contaminants: These include viruses, bacteria, and protozoa that have severe health implications.
  • Organic Chemical Contaminants: These include volatile and synthetic organic chemicals, which are by-products of petroleum products and industrial processes. These can also result from septic systems, gasoline stations, and agricultural applications.
