South El Monte's primary water supply originates from groundwater in the Main San Gabriel Groundwater Basin. It is extracted through production wells situated in the city and operated by California American Water (San Marino System). Though the water is treated with chlorine before being distributed through the city, reports indicate that the water quality in South El Monte bypasses 6 EWG Health Guidelines and contains a total of 16 contaminants, including nitrate, chromium, and tetrachloroethylene. A report published regarding the city's water quality in 2018 also warns about pesticides, herbicides, microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria, and even radioactive contaminants in the water.
